As of Nov. 1, 187 sites across 21 countries have met the association’s standard for dark-sky places.

The sites “must demonstrate that the Milky Way is readily visible to the unaided eye” and that “no nearby artificial light sources yield significant glare,” said Ashley Wilson, of the association.

In some dark-sky areas, it’s possible to see up to 15,000 stars, compared with 500 or fewer in urban places.
