Best for teens: Flesh & Buns, Covent Garden

Taking your teenager to this, the dark basement branch of the Aussie-owned bao joint is a little like taking them to an edgy dive bar: but happily, more legal. Snack on Korean chicken wings or bites of sushi ahead of plates of ‘flesh’ – crispy duck or barbecue beef short rib say – that’s there for stuffing into Taiwanese milk buns. A warning: the manga wallpapers in the loos do contain some scenes of sex and violence (albeit in cartoon form) – if you’d rather keep things strictly U-rated, distract your teen by telling them about the toast-your-own-marshmallows s’mores you’re going to order. And just like that, we’re all kids again.

Best for atmosphere: Gökyüzü, Harringay

Turkish restaurant Gökyüzü is not just a Green Lanes favourite: it’s a genuine north London institution. The décor isn’t dazzling, but the staff are hugely welcoming – especially of little people – and it’s loud, buzzy and fun. Perfect if your gang haven’t quite mastered the art of, ahem, using their ‘indoor voices’. Portions are huge and the food is wonderfully fresh, with bread pulled straight from the wood oven, and skewered meats grilled to order. Balance it out with chilled hummus or piping-hot boregi (deep-fried filo parcels), or keep it simple with one of the sharing platters, which include mezze and mains and come in every size imaginable.
