Safety Precautions for Coronavirus

Hi, Friends Welcome to MasterjiTips. The threat of Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is looming large over the world. The Coronavirus believed to have originated from an animal market in Wuhan is believed to have infected 25,000 people and killed over 750 people in China alone.

Safety Precautions

Unfortunately, it has already spread across more than 25 countries by now. Recognizing the imminent danger, every major country has imposed strict screening and mandatory quarantine for the travellers from China. Some have even banned travel to and from China by now.

In India itself, 3 confirmed positive cases have been reported from Kerala till now.

There is no vaccine yet developed to prevent infection from the Coronavirus. The best way is to avoid being exposed but seems difficult given that it is said to spread even in the absence of Coronavirus symptoms. The person may himself not be aware that he is yet infected and may unknowingly spread it to somebody else. As per the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines, the following will help in preventing infection.

(1.) Wash your hands frequently for Safety Precautions

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub if your hands are not visibly dirty, for at least 20 seconds. The alcohol-based hand sanitizer should have at least 60% alcohol.

(2.) Practice Respiratory Hygiene for Safety Precautions

When coughing and sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with flexed elbow or tissue – discard the tissue immediately into a closed bin and wash your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

(3.) Maintain Social Distance for Safety Precautions

Maintain at least 1 meter (3 feet) distance between yourself and other people, especially from those who are coughing, sneezing or have a fever. This will prevent breathing in small droplets containing the virus.

(4.) Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands

Your hands may have touched any surface contaminated with the virus. If you then touch your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands, you may transfer the virus from the surface to yourself.

(5.) If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early

Seek medical care if you have travelled to an area in China where 2019-nCoV has been reported, or if you have been in close contact with someone who has traveled from China and has respiratory symptoms.

(6.) If you have any respiratory symptoms but no travel history to or within China

If you have any respiratory symptoms even with no travel history to or within China, observe basic respiratory and hand hygiene and try to stay home until you are recovered.

(7.) Practice hygiene measures when visiting animal product markets

Ensure regular hand washing with soap and water after touching animals and animal products;
avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth with hands;
also avoid contact with sick animals or spoiled animal products.
Strictly avoid any contact with other animals in the market (e.g., stray cats and dogs, rodents, birds, bats).
Avoid contact with potentially contaminated animal waste or fluids on the soil or structures of shops and market facilities.

(8.) Avoid consumption of raw or under cooked animal products

Avoid consumption of raw or under cooked animal products. Handle raw meat, milk or animal organs with care, to avoid cross-contamination with uncooked foods, as per good food safety practices.

(9.) Face Masks and Gloves

The use of Face Masks to prevent infection is debatable as they may themselves be carriers of infection. If you do use them, make sure to change them frequently. Also use only NH95 respirator mask and not the regular surgical face mask, which is thicker and more effective than the regular one.
Wearing gloves may make people to not wash their hands. Also make sure to wear new gloves at regular intervals.

(10.) Clean and disinfect frequently

Touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe for Safety Precautions.
