How to restore WhatsApp chat history

You can transfer your WhatsApp data to a new phone by restoring from Google Drive or local backup.

Restore from google drive backup

To successfully restore a Google Drive backup, you must use the same phone number and Google account used to make the backup.

To restore your backup:

  1. Uninstall and reinstall whatsapp.
  2. Open whatsapp and verify your number.
  3. When prompted, tap Restore to restore your chat and media from Google Drive.
  4. After the restoration process is complete, tap Next. Your chat will be displayed after initialization is complete.
  5. WhatsApp will start restoring your media files after your chat is restored.

If you install WhatsApp from Google Drive without any prior backup, WhatsApp will be automatically restored from your local backup file.

Restore from a local backup

If you want to use local backup, you must transfer files to a new phone using a computer, file explorer, or SD card.

Note:

  • Your phone will store the last seven days of local backup files.
  • Local backup will be automatically created every day at 2:00 pm and save as a file in your phone.
  • If your data is not stored in the / sdcard / WhatsApp / folder, you may see ‘Internal storage’ or ‘Main storage’ folder.

Restore a less recent local backup

If you want to restore a local backup that is not the most recent, you must do the following:

  • Download the file manager app.
  • Navigate to SDCard / WhatsApp / Database in the file manager app. If your data is not stored on the SD card, you may see ‘internal storage’ or ‘main storage’ instead of SDCard.
  • Rename the backup file you want to restore from MSGStore-YYY-MM-DD.1.DB.Crypt12 to MSGStore.DB.Crypt12. It is possible that earlier backups may occur over earlier protocols, such as Crypto 9 or Crypto 10. Do not change the number of basement extensions.
  • Uninstall and reinstall whatsapp.
  • Restore when prompted.
