EA Responds to Rumors of ‘Skeleton Crew’ Working on Battlefield 2042

EA, Battlefield 2042’s publisher, responds to rumors that it has essentially abandoned the latest shooter to prioritize newer titles.

While Battlefield 2042 did not get off to the best of starts, with DICE’s latest shooter being labeled by fans as having a disastrous launch, both publisher EA and the developer have been working to improve the game since its early days. After months of fixing some of the most obvious and game breaking bugs in Battlefield 2042, introducing new features, and more, it is clear that the FPS has not been utterly left in an incomplete state by either DICE or EA.

However, it could be the case that Battlefield 2042 will soon be helmed by what has been termed a “skeleton crew.” Recent reports suggest that EA has only a small number of staff working on the game, primarily to deliver the multiplayer seasons promised to those who bought Battlefield 2042. These reports paint the picture that EA and DICE regard Battlefield 2042 as something that needs to be worked on out of commitment rather than trying to turn the game around.

EA has since claimed that this is not the case and that rumors of a “skeleton crew” working on Battlefield 2042 are untrue. EA instead stated that a “significant” team is working at DICE, alongside some support studios, focused on “evolving and improving” Battlefield 2042 for all players. The publisher also made reference to the fact that is has been listening to its player base and working off of the feedback from that. This could explain why progress has been somewhat slow for Battlefield 2042, considering that the first season of the game is set to launch this week, over six months after the game first released.

The rumors that a smaller team of developers is working on Battlefield 2042 also claimed that DICE and EA’s main priority was now to get a new Battlefield title going as quickly as possible. Back in April of this year, there were rumors circulating that a new Battlefield game was in development, which again caused some fans to believe that the work on Battlefield 2042 was not to salvage the game but to fulfill promises to those who pre-ordered it.

Whether Battlefield 2042 is being abandoned by EA and DICE is currently unknown, but it would appear that both companies would rather leave the mistakes of the past behind them. With new features that were disliked by Battlefield fans, DICE has admitted that it has learned valuable lessons from the negative reception of its latest game. However, it is more possible that the developer will show the lessons it has learned in a new game rather than take on the task of fixing the current one.

Battlefield 2042 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
