As part of Netflix’s Geeked Week, a Cyberpunk 2077 anime adaption reveals itself with a teaser trailer and information on when it releases.
Cyberpunk 2077 is an action role-playing game that sees players as a customizable mercenary known as V who deals with an implant that threatens to erase their entire personality for someone else’s. Despite fans being unable to fully make their own character for the game, the character creator was made into one of the game’s selling points before launch.
As part of Netflix’s Geeked Week virtual event, the streaming service revealed a teaser trailer, as well as a release window, for a Cyberpunk 2077 anime adaptation. The project was announced in 2020, but had gone completely quiet shortly afterwards. Now, both new and old fans of 2077 can now expect to watch the show, titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, sometime in September.
The show is being animated and directed by Studio Trigger, a fan-favorite studio that’s been responsible for ground-breaking titles such as the movie Promare, and the series Little Witch Academia. The Cyberpunk show will only be 10 episodes in length, but Studio Trigger is known for telling cohesive stories in smaller episode counts than other anime. This means fans most likely will have a fast-paced and action-packed show to watch ahead of them.
While some plot details have been revealed, it’s not yet fully known if the protagonist of the show is V from the original game or an entirely original character. While the trailer makes it clear that the show will feature a rather colorful cast of characters, all that’s known about the protagonist is he aims to become a mercenary to survive in Night City. Even if the character in question isn’t V, the inspiration from V is clear as day, as the character even sports an undercut to match.
No matter how people feel about Cyberpunk 2077, this announcement is certainly exciting. No matter if players have stuck with the game despite its issues, or didn’t want to try the game out due to the bad launch, there’s an anime coming that may excite all sorts of fans once it arrives.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
